Reflective Summary on the Workshop for future Content Writers

Recently, I had the distinct honour of hosting and presenting at the workshop ‘Solopreneurship and Digital Content Writing’ for the bright and enthusiastic students of ESOFT Metro Campus in Batticaloa. I was invited to share my journey as the founder of Content Writer (PVT) LTD (Content Writer), Sri Lanka’s first-ever content writing firm and how it has evolved to include over 450 work-from-home writers covering hundreds of niches. This experience was both enriching and enlightening, providing a platform to share my insights into the thriving field of digital content writing.

Content Writing: A Growing Lucrative Profession

I began by highlighting the dynamic nature of content writing and its potential as a lucrative profession. In today’s digital era, the demand for quality content is surging. Businesses increasingly rely on engaging and informative content to connect with their audiences, creating a wealth of opportunities for skilled writers. This burgeoning demand underscores the importance of honing writing skills to cater to diverse niches, from blogging and social media to technical writing and SEO content.

Sharing My Journey: From a Budding writer to Global Reach

My journey of establishing the first content writing firm in Sri Lanka, a venture that began with humble beginnings and has grown to employ over 450 writers working from home across various niches. This growth was driven by identifying gaps in the digital sector, particularly the need for high-quality, niche-specific content. Our firm addressed these gaps by training writers to specialise in different subjects, ensuring that our clients received expert-level content tailored to their needs.

Gaps in the Digital Content Writing Sector and the Sri Lankan Market

One significant gap identified in the digital sector is the lack of specialised content that meets the nuanced demands of different industries. In Sri Lanka, the corporate market has yet to fully recognise the potential of content writing. Many companies still rely on generic content, missing out on the benefits of targeted, high-quality writing that can drive engagement and conversions. I emphasised the importance of bridging these gaps by raising awareness and demonstrating the value that professional content writers can bring to businesses.

How to Become a Professional Content Writer?

Transitioning into the heart of the workshop, I addressed the steps to becoming a professional content writer. The first step is a commitment to continuous learning. Aspiring writers should immerse themselves in reading and writing regularly, refining their style and understanding of different content formats. Additionally, developing a robust understanding of SEO, social media trends, and digital marketing strategies can significantly enhance a writer’s appeal to potential clients.

Areas to Develop in Your Expertise Subject

Specialisation is key to standing out in the crowded content writing market. I encouraged the students to identify their areas of interest and invest time in becoming subject matter experts. Whether it’s technology, healthcare, finance, or lifestyle, deep knowledge in a specific field allows writers to produce authoritative and insightful content. This expertise not only builds credibility but also attracts higher-paying clients seeking specialised knowledge.

How to Find Jobs?

Finding content writing jobs can initially seem daunting, but numerous platforms and strategies can simplify this process. I recommended starting with freelance job boards like Upwork, Fiverr, and Freelancer, where numerous clients post writing gigs. Networking is equally crucial—joining professional groups on LinkedIn, participating in relevant online forums, and attending industry events can open doors to new opportunities. Building a personal website or blog to showcase one’s portfolio is also an effective way to attract clients

How to Take the First Step?

Taking the first step in a content writing career involves a mix of preparation and action. I advised the students to start with small projects to build a portfolio. Offering services at competitive rates initially can help in gaining testimonials and refining skills. It’s also important to set clear goals, establish a disciplined work routine, and continually seek feedback to improve.

Challenges Faced

No journey is without its challenges, and content writing is no exception. Common hurdles include dealing with writer’s block, managing time effectively, and handling client revisions. Additionally, the competition can be fierce, and securing consistent work requires persistence and adaptability. I shared my experiences of overcoming these challenges through strategic planning, constant learning, and maintaining a resilient mindset.

Differentiating Yourself: From Freelancer to Solopreneur

A significant part of the workshop focused on the transition from freelancer to Solopreneur. While both roles involve independent work, a Solopreneur takes on a more entrepreneurial approach, managing all aspects of their business from marketing to client relations. I emphasised the importance of building a personal brand, setting clear business goals, and leveraging digital tools for efficiency. Developing a unique value proposition and offering niche services can significantly differentiate a Solopreneur in the market.

1. Marketing Strategies: Suppose you are a content writer specialising in travel writing. As a solopreneur, you could create a blog that offers travel tips and stories, positioning yourself as an expert in the field. You could also offer packaged services to travel agencies, including blog posts, social media content, and email newsletters, showcasing your ability to handle comprehensive content strategies.

2. Client Relations: Managing client relationships is crucial. As a solopreneur, you might use a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tool to keep track of client interactions, preferences, and project histories. This helps in providing personalised services and maintaining strong, long-term relationships.

3. Efficiency Tools: If you write technical manuals, tools like Adobe InDesign can help create professional, visually appealing documents. Using collaboration tools like Google Docs allows real-time feedback and editing from clients, speeding up the review process and ensuring that the final product meets their expectations.

4. AI Tools: Leveraging AI tools can significantly enhance productivity and creativity. For example, using AI-driven content generation tools like Jasper or Writesonic can help generate initial drafts or ideas, while AI-powered analytics tools like Google Analytics and HubSpot can provide insights into content performance and audience preferences. Is AI Going to Take Over All Content Writers’ Jobs?

The rise of AI tools has sparked concerns about the future of content writing jobs. However, AI is not poised to take over all content writing jobs. Instead, AI serves as a powerful assistant to human writers, enhancing their capabilities rather than replacing them. Here’s why budding content writers can view AI as an opportunity rather than a threat:

1. Augmentation, Not Replacement: AI tools are designed to augment the skills of human writers. They can automate repetitive tasks such as data entry, keyword analysis, and basic content generation. This automation frees writers from mundane tasks, allowing them to invest more time in creativity, strategic planning, and crafting unique content that resonates with their audience.

2. Efficiency and Productivity: AI tools can significantly enhance efficiency. For instance, tools like Jasper or Writesonic can quickly generate initial drafts or content ideas, providing a starting point that writers can refine and personalise. Human creativity, empathy, and storytelling abilities are irreplaceable qualities that AI cannot replicate. Therefore, the unique voice and perspective of a human writer remain essential.

AI is not a replacement for content writers but a powerful tool that can help them work smarter and more effectively. By leveraging AI tools, budding content writers can enhance their productivity, creativity, and quality of work, positioning themselves for success in an evolving digital landscape. Embracing AI as a collaborative partner can open up new opportunities and make the writing process more dynamic and enjoyable.

To attract more clients online and become internationally recognisable, I advised the students to focus on building a strong online presence. This includes maintaining an active blog, engaging with audiences on social media, and contributing to reputable online publications. Networking with international peers and participating in global writing forums can also enhance visibility. Demonstrating expertise through well-researched, high-quality content and continuously updating skills to match global standards are crucial steps in this journey.


Hosting and speaking at the ‘Solopreneurship and Digital Content Writing’ workshop was a profoundly rewarding experience. It was inspiring to interact with the students of ESOFT Metro CampusBatticaloa and to share my insights into the vibrant world of content writing. I am confident that with dedication, continuous learning, and strategic planning, these students will be well-equipped to embark on successful careers as content writers and Solopreneurs.
